About this Memorial

In 1944 and 1945, our community suffered unimaginable loss. For 20 agonizing and uninterrupted months, families in Grand Island/Hall County received the call that no one ever wants to receive. 94 boys were killed in those two years. Imagine what that kind of sustained assault would have had on the citizens of Grand Island.

A small group met for coffee at the Hotel Yancey in 1945 and you can almost hear them naming fallen boy after fallen boy and asking, “What are we going to do? How do we make sure they are never forgotten?” Their action became Grand Island’s Memorial Stadium, a fitting monument to recognize the sacrifice of our community’s young men.

For years, a plaque has graced the front of East Stadium commemorating these fine young men. However, as time has gone by, more of the missing in action were found, and finally listed as lost in combat. Additionally, Grand Island/Hall County has lost several more serving our country in subsequent wars.

This Veteran’s Memorial Wall display is a lasting memorial to those of ours who have paid the ultimate price for freedom.

This wall represents men who earned nearly every honor available to them. There are WWI Victory Medals, Air Medals, Bronze Medals, Silver Stars, Gold Stars, Distinguished Service Cross Medals, Distinguished Flying Cross Medals and more.

We lost men at sea, we lost men in the Bermuda Triangle, we lost men in the air, we lost men on deserted islands, we lost men on prisoner marches as POWs. We lost men fighting bravely and strongly until they were unable to fight any more.

Here we honor their lives and their sacrifice.
